I paint mostly using oils, in medium to large format. I tend to paint abstractly and experimentally, painting layers on layers. Whilst the work is abstract, it contains figurative components. I am interested in how the different elements of a painting interact and create a sense of dynamic space. I also paint directly from life as I believe this helps guide visual thinking. I am interested in the New York School of abstract expressionists, and this influences my approach to painting, but I also draw from my own experience. I like to paint quickly, sometimes with high energy, then go through a series of steps of deletion, editing and refining. In the final painting, I often hope to capture a series of ‘moments’; movement, colour and energy are important components of the final output. I treat the canvas as an ongoing problem with many possible solutions, each step informs the next and so on.
