I paint mostly using oils, in medium to large format. I tend to paint abstractly and experimentally, painting layers on layers, with different thickness of paint. Wet on wet as well as dry. Whilst the work is abstract, it contains figurative components. I am interested in how the different elements of a painting interact and create a sense of dynamic space. I also paint directly from life as I believe this helps guide visual thinking. I am interested in the New York School of abstract expressionists, and this influences my approach to painting, but I also draw from my own experience. I like to paint quickly, sometimes with high energy, then go through a series of steps of deletion, editing and refining. In the final painting, I often hope to capture a series of ‘moments’; movement, colour and energy are important components of the final output. I treat the canvas as an ongoing problem with many possible solutions, each step informs the next and so on.
